When I reflect on 2013, the word that keeps coming up over and over again is LESSONS. I/we learned a lot of lessons last year.
LESSON #1:
I
pride myself on being a learner, I am always reading/researching
something. I enjoy teaching myself and others how to do new things so
my biggest LESSON this year should not have come as a shock to me, but
it totally did. After much prayer, thought, reading, research we took
the leap and decided to homeschool Matthew for kindergarten. We started
in mid-July and it took a few weeks to get traction but we have
established a groove and are moving through our curriculum at a steady
pace. I never understood why people homeschooled until I was standing
at the precipice of Kindergarten and realizing that the ramifications of
my decision were
So, if you are not friends with
any "weird homeschoolers", congratulations, now you are! To be honest, I
think I might have been considered weird WAY BEFORE this designation.
LESSON #2:
Sometimes
you need to just DO IT already. We have talked and read, talked and
read about getting chickens and one day, my very spur of the moment
husband, while at the feed store no less said hey, let's get chickens. I
looked at him, with my "are you nuts" eyes and he said "come on, we
will never be totally ready, just like having kids". Well, we came home
that day with two adorable little furballs that took up residence in my
bathtub for a few months. (Notice the theme.....WEIRD seems to be our
modus operandi). I digress, so we went from a family of 4 humans, 2
canine and 1 feline, to chicken people overnight and yes, we named them
CHICKEN and NOODLE. I will admit, while there was a learning curve we
have thoroughly enjoyed the feathered ones. Willie built them a really
cute A-frame coop from 80% recycled material. I am still amused by
their personalities and how they, just like all the other animals, want
to be right with us when we are outdoors. We did lose a bird to a
predator right before Thanksgiving and replaced her with three younger
hens. I have a chicken post in the works right now so stay tuned.
LESSON #3:
Sometimes,
procrastination pays off, sometimes. When we bought our current home 5
years ago, we knew the HVAC system needed to be replaced in a bad way.
We just couldn't ever pull the trigger and cough up the funds to
replace it while it was working, I use the term working VERY lightly.
In August it finally went kaput, totally kaput. As it just so happens,
my in laws were scheduled to head here a few weeks later, and just
happened to be camping 30 minutes or so away from the HVAC company that
employed me for 10 years in Texas. So, because we do NOTHING normal, we
imported our new bigger, badder, WAY more efficient HVAC system from
Texas. We spent 3ish weeks without air conditioning and it was
well....interesting. Sitting here today, a few months later with a
manageable electric bill and no space heaters chugging out heat all
winter I am thankful we had the funds, thankful we had the connections,
thankful we had family willing to move a trailer load of equipment and
thankful for CONDITIONED AIR!
We hope your year was full of blessings and that you recognize all those lessons as the blessings that they are.

Bliss x 15
Today we celebrate 15 years of wedded bliss.....hah!
So anyone who has been married more than a week or two knows marriage is not about bliss.
It is completely and totally about choosing to DO LIFE with the strange-cute-frustrating-charming-annoying-loving-silly-relentless-weird person that was made for you. It is about leaning on each others strengths while forgiving each other for their weaknesses. It is recognizing that the goal of marriage is to HONOR GOD with this relationship that he blessed us with.
This union we are in is not quite perfect but is very real. Real can be so beautiful and so terribly not, regardless, we have learned to do real and I hope to be doing real with this guy until death do us part.
So anyone who has been married more than a week or two knows marriage is not about bliss.

In every marriage more than a week old,
there are grounds for divorce.
The trick is to find,
and continue to find,
grounds for marriage.

Village
So, my dear friend Anita stole the title of this post right out of my wee little brain.
We are blessed, incredibly blessed, by our "village" that surrounds, supports and loves us no matter how crazy~dysfunctional~nuts we may be. I don't think we were meant to be on our own in this crazy world and the people that love us prove that theory time and again.
The invite for a girls night...even when I can't warms my heart.
Letting the dogs out for a run when we are away.
Watching the littlest Riggle while big brother spends the evening in the ER.
Guarding our humble abode (and rescuing escaped canines) while alerting us to things that don't seem right.
Meals delivered, shared or made for or with us.
Projects finished...well closer at least.
Recipes shared or tried out on us.
Pulling weeds, sewing, cleaning...some things most friends would not help with our village is right there with a smile on (at least on the outside) ready to help.
People who make my kids feel their love make my heart happy and there are a lot of you so
THANK YOU
THANK YOU
THANK YOU

End of an era.....or four
There are so many phases that are ending in our world right now:
Tricycles..the boys both have 2-wheeled bikes and it still startles me a bit to see my baby barreling down the driveway on his big boy bike.
Potty training is done, the potty chair is gone, diapers are outta' here and the amount of nakedness at any given moment around this joint has drastically increased.
K is trying to give up his nap and I would be telling a lie if I said that didn't make me a little sad. He does nap some days, just not every day.
We have finally made the switch from whole milk to 2%, maybe this will help me drop some more pounds since I just have to have milk in my morning tea?
The days of having leftovers when cooking a "normal" sized meal are quickly vanishing. Kimber's appetite = voracious!
Along with this there are a number of new phases starting which is fun, most of the time.
Matthew can make his own fold-over peanut butter sandwich or tortilla. Of course he uses at least twice the amount of peanut butter I use but hey...one less thing for mama to do.
The amount of imaginary play has exploded these last few months. I am amazed that the chairs around the dining room table have been re-purposed into a boat, tent poles, a train, a stove and a scooter parking lot.
Kimber has become quite adept at serving himself. He opens the fridge, moves his chair over to the fridge, climbs up on chair, opens the fruit drawer, removes fruit, typically a clementine orange, sits the fruit on the floor, closes the fridge, moves chair back to the table, peels his orange and devours it. No chance of scurvy for this guy.
Cutting, lots of cutting. Matthew can cut things out pretty well and of course Kimber thinks his skills are just as good.
Superheroes, bad guys, good guys......both boys are enthralled with any character somewhat "super" in any way. While Captain America and Jackie Chan (did you know there is a Jackie Chan cartoon, no, you didn't, well, you're welcome now you do) are at the top of the list, Kung Fu Panda, Spiderman, Finn McMissile, Tow Mater, Superman and Batman are favorites too.

2011, YOU ROCKED
My top ten list for 2011
1) Shaved 10 whole minutes off my half-marathon pace from a year ago!!
2) Took on a part time paying gig that I am enjoying.
3) I survived. The interrupted sleep cycles, the food demands, the poop, the vomit, the big tornado, the arctic storm, temper tantrums, living in limbo, fevers, K starting MMO, ,,,,and I am happy, healthy and truly love my life.
4) My children still love me! I still get unsolicited kisses from them both just further proof that I managed to make it another year as a pretty decent mama!
5) After a 13+ year search our family found a church home!
6) Will and I had our first night away since becoming parents 4 years ago. Bonus points, we got to spend it with great friends and run our first Warrior Dash.
7) No more diapers in this house!!
8) Last girls weekend was in 2005, in New York City. This was fixed this year, a sandy Florida beach, books, some adult libations and a few full nights of sleep....heavenly!!
9) In the last 60 days of 2011....I became the owner of not one...but several new pairs of shoes. Yes, I needed some...just not sure I "needed" 4 pairs of boots and 2 pairs of peep toe Tom's.
10) Alabama is starting to feel like home. We have some genuine friends, are involved in our little community, have awesome neighbors and best of all.....Will went to work for a local company so we hope to be staying put for awhile!

Simple Pleasures
I never cease to be amazed at how satisfied these boys can be by the most mundane tasks.
Last weekend we cleaned up and tilled the garden so there is fresh soft newly dug up dirt everywhere. They loved watching Willie till but they have really enjoyed digging in the soft dirt, so much so that I actually got to mow a bit without any help yesterday....which NEVER happens.
These guys love helping me fold laundry, I hate folding laundry but they LOVE it. They are starting to put up their own socks and underwear..which is REALLY nice.
Raking leaves is their most favorite fall activity and we have spent many hours in recent weeks raking and playing in the fallen fun.

Alternative Therapy
Last night, for the first time...in a LOOONG time I went for a evening run, all by myself...no babies, no dog, no timeframe. When I say LONG time I mean it. It was awesome, if felt good, the air was coolish, it had just stopped raining, I had new tunes loaded on the iPod and I just ran and ran and ran. 4 miles worth in fact and actually felt like I could have done more had the mosquito poison truck not been bearing down on me.
The thing about running ALONE is you actually have time to think...understand and process some of the things going on in your life. As much as I thought at my age I would have it "all figured out", I certainly don't and it is only in these brief moments that I gain a little perspective.
In the midst of this run I heard this song that I don't ever recall hearing and it was EXACTLY what I needed to hear. Here are the lyrics....they truly do apply to all of us and gave me such a sense of peace and acceptance, which I desperately needed!

"Welcome To Wherever You Are"
Maybe we're different, but we're still the same
We all got the blood of Eden, running through our veins
I know sometimes it's hard for you to see
You come between just who you are and who you wanna be
If you feel alone, and lost and need a friend
Remember every new beginning, is some beginning's end
[Chorus]
Welcome to wherever you are
This is your life, you made it this far
Welcome, you gotta believe
That right here right now, you're exactly where you're supposed to be
Welcome, to wherever you are
When everybody's in, and you're left out
And you feel your drowning, in a shadow of a doubt
Everyones a miracle in their own way
Just listen to yourself, not what other people say
When it seems you're lost, alone and feeling down
Remember everybody's different
Just take a look around
[Chorus]
Be who you want to, be who you are
Everyones a hero, everyones a star
When you wanna give up, and your hearts about to break
Remember that you're perfect, God makes no mistakes
Maybe we're different, but we're still the same
We all got the blood of Eden, running through our veins
I know sometimes it's hard for you to see

Spoiled
So, we have lived in/on our little cul-de-sac for 3 years and I can officially say that I am spoiled. I am not sure that I am ever going to be able to live on a real street again. Awesome neighbors, gorgeous trees, a park next door and a nice long driveway for little boys to ride bikes on makes me realize what good house picker-outers we are!

Superwoman, I am not.
A friend, one that I consider SO ON TOP OF IT all the time, confessed some of her imperfections and it made me think, what a humbling, liberating feeling it might be to just be honest.
It is so easy, from the outside looking in to think friends, family or neighbors are more on top of things than I am but the truth is we are all fighting our own battles.
I miss the easy days. I miss hanging out with my funny husband. Before kids, before rent houses, before the never-ending to do list. Since we married while I was in college and spent the next 5 years finishing college and graduate school I am not sure our life was ever "easy" but it seems like that phase was much easier than this raising little people one is.
I used to be so patient and lately I feel like I lose my patience constantly....I hate yelling and getting mad but there are days where I feel like all I do is get on to my little guys. I hate myself and feel like such a failure when I lose it with them. They mean so much to me and I swore I would be this amazing, awesome, super mom and the fact is, some days I am not.
I am actually starting to enjoy cooking. I know, so very domestic of me. Cooking used to be such a chore back in my working outside the home days and while it is still a chore some days, these last few years it has become a bit satisfying. Giada I am not but I do pretty well.
I hate dusting...I mean truly despise it. (Sorry D, couldn't find better words). Of all the household chores, it is the most annoying, I mean the minute you dust it needs to be done again. At least the bathroom stays fairly clean for aday hour or two.
We recently changed up our bedtime routine and it has been working much better. I spent several months HATING bedtime in a bad way. The entire process physically, mentally and emotionally wore me out and I can guarantee I was not a very good wife after going through that. Our new routine of laying down with them (which I swore I would NEVER do) for a few minutes works, right or wrong, we have found something that works and we are ALL happier....though I really have to fight hard not to fall asleep with them sometimes.
Just remember, there is always a story behind the story and NO ONE is perfect. The funny thing about perfection is that we are always striving for it when in reality it doesn't exist.

Almost a chicken farmer...almost
A little secret for you, I want chickens....BAD!! I know, not cool or hip but it is the truth.
Not so much because I think they are the most cuddly creatures on the earth, I just think fresh eggs would be amazing, yes I would be spoiled, but AMAZED. If you have not eaten fresh eggs, you must find a local producer and do so. Once you go fresh..you'll never go back!!!
We almost got chicks this year but decided with the state of the economy and job situation that we would hold off for the time being.

A little about me....a little about you?
Fun to share....and a great way to spend some time on-hold:
Making : fabric Easter Baskets for my boys and a purse for my niece
Cooking : absolutely nothing
Drinking : H2O
Reading: The Five Love Languages for Children
Wanting: a new hairdo
Looking: at my messy desk
Playing: stay awake
Wasting: time wishing I had more of it
Sewing: same as making.....
Wishing: life were easier to predict
Enjoying: the odd silence of two guys NAPPING
Waiting: for my long awaited stand mixer to arrive
Liking: this weather
Wondering: what life has in store
Loving: checking things off the to do list
Hoping: for a good night of sleep
Marvelling: at how many times a day I pick up the SAME things
Needing: some stiffy...fabric stablizer
Smelling: laundry
Wearing: tee and running pants
Following: the path of destruction created by thing 1 & thing 2
Noticing: that I will be closer to 40 than 30 in a few weeks....YUCK
Knowing: that being an adult sucks sometimes
Thinking: of a kid free dinner out
Opening: my checkbook
Giggling: over how big Kimber thinks he is
Feeling: kinda energized after my run

Too Together
I am by nature a touchy-feely girl. My kids know it, my spouse knows it, heck the canine knows it but man...there are days that there is just WAY TOO MUCH togetherness.
Please, stop poking my eyes to further confirm that you know they are eyes, stop pushing/climbing up me while I am at the stove/sink/washer,stop riding me like a bucking bronc when I am doing crunches or push ups and really must story-folding laundry-cutting fabric-or any other activity in which I am near the floor be a FULL CONTACT SPORT?
I love my boys but a little distance every now and then would benice AMAZING!

Potty Training.....Mommy
Somebody pleeeeease tell me that someday, before I enter the nursing home I will be able to go to the bathroom ALONE, truly ALONE, seriously!
Why is it, my mommy friends, who entered mommy-land before me, did not let me in on this secret. They tell you all about sleepless nights, picky eaters, crying babies, temper tantrums...but nobody tells you that sitting on the toilet will become such a public effort.I must confess, baby number two has been nursed on the potty, don't judge until you've been there! Just this morning the toddler built a toilet paper castle, complete with "soldiers", aka tampons while the crawler tried valiantly to get to the plunger....EWWWW.
What I have yet to figure out is that Dad can go to the bathroom and spend half the day in there and no one bothers him. So maybe I am exaggerating a bit but he DOES get quiet bathroom time periodically.
I am just hoping this is a phase and within a few years there won't be so much interest in what Mom is doing behind closed (I hope) doors!!!
